Sunny side up

It is almost time for another school year to begin. Seems only last week the last school year ended. For the first time in 21 years a part of my heart will not be seated in a classroom at Red Bay School as a student. Anna, in addition to working with the State of Alabama Department of Human Resources, will be going to graduate school. Kennedy will be attending college at ICC. Dawn will still be teaching first grade at Red Bay Elementary. This is the beginning of her 29th year of teaching. Sometimes when my mind goes meandering down memory lane it seems that she should be beginning first grade instead of teaching it.

She continues to use the teacher she had in first grade as her role model. Mrs. Marsha Wilson was such a caring teacher. The year Dawn was a first grader, every afternoon she had something wonderful to tell that Mrs. Wilson had done that day. When Christmas time came around, we were doing Dawn’s Christmas shopping for her school gifts. We found a gift that she thought was just right for the one she had drawn their name. We found small “happies” to give each of her classmates, but when it came to finding the just right gift for Mrs. Wilson, Dawn could never find anything that she felt was good enough.
