When someone gives a testimony in a court case, they are sworn in with the question, “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” For me, it took a number of incarcerations in county jails, penal farms and the Tennessee state prison to realize “What is done in the dark comes out in the light.” Thus, it took, sadly, a number of court cases for me to reveal the whole truth.

Doctors at the University of Michigan were advised by risk management to own up to mistakes early. When they chose a more honest approach, the number of malpractice claims fell, they were esteemed by patients for their transparency, legal expenses went down, and patient satisfaction increased. Interestingly, patients seemed to recover faster.
