Sunny side up

As I think back to September 25, 1965, I realize going by calendar years that is a long time. In my heart it seems just a blink of my eyes. Ruble and I were married on that day 59 years ago. As candlelight cast a soft glow on the gathering of our family and friends at Shottsville Methodist Church, we began our story together.

He and I had traveled to Montgomery on the Monday before. We had to find an apartment that we could afford. We left before sunrise and arrived back to my home that night around 10 p.m. We had found an apartment in the lovely Cloverdale section of the city. The rent on the completely furnished apartment was $75 per month. The ad in the newspaper said the rent was a non-negotiable $85 per month, but the owner of the apartment was the widow of an Air Force officer. Ruble was wearing his uniform that day and she immediately told him we could have the apartment for $75. “You ‘fly boys’ are special,” our new landlady said. She became a dear friend.
