Sunny side up

June 21st is supposedly the longest day of the year and until last Friday I had no reason to dispute those who are smart enough to give us such information. As I waited with Michelle to hear how Dawn was progressing in surgery at Vanderbilt, it seemed to me that time was standing still. The operation began at 1 p.m. and was scheduled to take approximately four hours.

At the end of four hours, the word came from the operating room that they had encountered a complication, and the surgery would take longer than initially thought. For this mother and sister waiting at home in the hinterlands of Shottsville, hearing such news seemed to make time really grind to a halt. We didn’t know what the complication was, we just knew there was one. Praying without ceasing is the only way to describe us. Two hours crept by. We got a text saying the surgery was over and Dawn was doing well. I don’t know exactly how many ways (or how many times) we said, thank you, Lord, but rest assured, we did. Then, we got a phone call from Anna and Kennedy’s dad saying that Anna and Kennedy, along with Doyle and a dear friend who was waiting with them were talking with the doctor.
