Sunny side up

I have a dear friend who sends me cards on special occasions and writes me letters from time to time “just because.” She is very computer savvy and does Facebooking, twittering, texting and all that, but she knows that I do not. Therefore, rather than trying to convince me that I should get in step with the world and learn all that, she enjoys the letters I occasionally write to her the old-fashioned way, and she responds the same way. I don’t sit down as often as I should and write her letters, but taking pen in hand is my favorite way to correspond. She sends me notes and letters in return.

When Ruble passed away 11 years ago, my friend sent me, for several weeks, handwritten notes saying she was praying that I would be strong and remember the good times. Those handwritten words meant a lot to me, and many a night I would get those cards out and read them repeatedly. That is the advantage the handwritten word has over those that are twittered, texted, Facebooked and all other means that technology has put in our path to use. I’m told by those in the know that whatever is sent in all those electronic ways is always out there in the great somewhere. I don’t understand that either.
