Sunny side up

As summer turns to autumn those who have the time, money and opportunity are making dashes for their last trip to the beach for this season. It is hard to believe that I equate those beach trips to cooling off in Bull Mountain Creek on hot, humid days. Even though that was life for my friends and I more than 60 years ago now, those “cool creek” afternoons are etched in my mind.

All the kids in the community would be in the creek splashing and floating on inner tubes. Some of the boys would swing out over the water on a tree limb and do the Tarzan yell as they took the plunge into the cool creek water. The normal swimming attire was cut-off blue jeans. A few had real swimsuits but no more than two or three. I was 13 years old before I had a “real” swimsuit. I was extremely proud of it, but as far as it adding any more enjoyment to that cool water on a hot humid day, it didn’t. When I relate stories of such times, our daughters always ask, “How could you enjoy that murky water?”
