Food essay: Love can be trout dip

It’s been said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Yet, despite my non-man status, there’s still a direct path from my tummy to my ticker. I’d venture that’s the case for many people.

It’s not just about the simple joy of eating delicious food, though even Solomon acknowledged that as integral to a life well lived. Food is a thing of community, a way of expressing love. We cook together to bond. We cook for each other to show friendship and support. We cook for each other out of obligation — as a daily chore, or to fulfill social requirements — and even that is a kind of love, if one that’s more mundane.
