The GM&O was incorporated in 1938 to merge the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which was accomplished in 1940. At the end of 1970, route mileage was 2734 (3946 miles of track); GM&O reported 8,285 million ton-miles of revenue freight and 44 million passenger-miles for that year. That’s today’s history lesson.

Also for history’s sake, my best friend Terry Wood recently took this picture of me, my lovely wife Janet (a.k.a. Gigi), daughter Madison, son-in-law Jake Taylor and our blonde-haired, blue eyed train engineer and grandson Hutton by the ole cotton compress wall which includes this mural of a GM&O steam locomotive.
