Sunny side up

Our first TV was really something. It had a 17-inch screen and a picture tube that had to have time to warm up before the screen would light up. Still, I thought we had the grandest form of entertainment of all time on a table in the corner of our living room. The year was 1956. The closest television station was in Birmingham.

There were a lot of hills and valleys between our community and the big city. The pitiful-looking antenna that was attached to a pole sunk in the ground beside our living room window brought mostly shadowy pictures engulfed in what looked like a major snowstorm into our living room. Still, we watched. That period is now called “The Golden Age of Television.” That phrase rings truer now than it did when I first began hearing it a few decades ago. The shows we watched then were so entertaining.
