Being a good and engaged citizen is a team sport, which may be why we love high school athletics, and especially football, as much as we do. Thursday’s 1A and 5A high school state championship games confirmed Norman Rockwell’s Americana is alive, well and thriving in Northeast Mississippi.

The 5A game saw West Point claim the 12th state championship in the school’s history. The Green Wave became the first in Mississippi to earn so many. They won four titles in the 1980s, but the latter eight have been earned much more recently, including five in the last eight years. Even recent seasons that did not end with them holding the trophy were very special: Thursday’s game marked eight seasons in a row that saw West Point compete in the championship game. Their season in the year prior to the run of eight saw them get as far as the north half championship.
